OBJETIVO

The project touches both sides of the lot and is organized in two volumes; one for the wet area and another for the rooms: two studio rooms and one for service. The patios between the rooms play the role of transposition space: a room - a patio - a room - a patio - a room. Cross ventilation, natural lighting, and the quality of the environment are the functions of the patios.
The structure is metallic. A “box” measuring 6mx24m with 16 pillars supports the beams. The space was modulated to rationalize the structural system, built with commercial profile beams measuring 12 meters in length.
The program's organization was essential for the rationalization of the structure and use of the metal profiles without any leftovers. The program is a sequence of room-patio-living room-patio-room, and its measures are 6m-4m-4m-4m-6m. A massive slab rests on the metal beams, and there are no coating on site. The poetry is in being what it is; concrete looks like concrete, metal looks like metal, and brick looks like brick.

The main enclosures on the front (west) and back (east) facades are made of brick. Hollow elements carefully seated in a drawing made for this work, like the double hollowed walls. The closing glass is recessed from the wall and makes it possible to close the building for cold days. The sun doesn't bother, and ventilation is welcomed. As Maristela, owner of the work, says: “with the heat of Prudente I don't even need to turn on the air conditioning.”

CONTEXTO

Presidente Prudente is a city with 220 thousand inhabitants located in the west of the State of São Paulo-Brazil and geographically distant from the great centers of cultural production. It reaches temperatures of 40 degrees in summer.
The city has its economy based on commerce and services. The small-scale, artisanal building is the greatest offer for the production of space and the construction of a more human and diverse city. Such characteristics are the thrust of the JARDIM PAULISTA STUDIO project: a more dynamic and humane city, a space with a diversity of uses and quality of the environment, with a low construction cost.
Located in a residential neighborhood and opposing a public school for young teenagers, the 10x30m plot, with an east-west orientation, was elevated from the ground. The building was implanted in the forward setback of the lot at an elevation 1m above the street. Its access is made through a gentle ramp.
The idea of public space as part of the private work environment was the objective of the forward setback. Besides the generous frontal setback, the transition space between the street and the building was kept at the street level, receiving a garden and a bench. The children of the State school opposite will be able to rest and pick fruit from the tree in the garden. The Brazilian grape tree (jabuticabeira) was planted in the garden and serves the neighborhood.
The building follows the neighborhood scale, a Pilates Studio with 200m2 leaning against the two borders and in the same skyline of the neighboring residences.

ACTUACIÓN

The structure and spatial quality of the work in its site context remain.
Relations with the city, the skyline in compliance with the neighborhood and the use of the setback area as an area of transposition between the public street and the private building still serve as a stage for the unpredictability of the use. The bench remains, the garden as well, despite having been reduced to make room for the use of this setback, the space in front of the lot is active.
The work is with 3 years of use and allows the alternation of its functions. Sometimes the patio is used for parties, sometimes it is used for physical activity and physiotherapy, especially after the pandemic. Studio rooms remain active and also alternate their use. The permeability of built space enables this constant transformation.
Environment comfort performance is favorable. Natural lighting, cross ventilation and open patios ensure the healthyness of the space. The client always mentions that there is no constant need to use air conditioning, even at high temperatures. The open and healthy place gained visibility during the pandemic, especially for the quality of this environment. The client works in the health area with physical activity and physiotherapy.
Small distinctive functions were installed in one of the rooms. An ice cream shop has taken over one of the studios and is directly connected to the street. Diverse functions and an interdisciplinary space keep the work active.
