OBJETIVO

Designed for multi-purpose use, featuring coworking rooms, a flexible media library/common area, and an external cafeteria/sitting area, the project was conceived as a meeting ground for people across different departments and an idea incubator. Its central glass container, enveloped by a wave-like structure, serves as both a dynamic interpretation and protection from the city’s unpredictable weather. The interior is meticulously crafted to transform into one, two, or three rooms as needed, with furnishings and walls facilitating various spatial configurations.

Informed by a comprehensive data approach, including participatory workshops and computational design, the building’s wave-like shape reflects the synthesis of gathered information, as well as the client’s vision of surfing the ever-changing waves of their industry.

The steel canopy is covered in a unique roofing system made from custom-patterned TetraPak and polycarbonate sheets. Chosen for both practicality and visual impact, these materials provide excellent thermal insulation and dampen noise during heavy rain. Notably, the TetraPak component, made from recycled packaging, contributes to the building’s sustainability efforts. Achieving the structure’s unique pattern involved using parametric design, resulting in a captivating interplay of light and shadow on sunny days, while evoking the serenity of the sea even on the rainiest days.

Constructing the curved canopy presented a significant challenge, demanding a design-to-production process that relied on experimentation and prototyping. Through trial and error, the team discovered that efficiency and flexibility could coexist. By placing the pieces diagonally, they not only achieved the desired aesthetic but also ensured proper water drainage and adapted the sheets to the deck’s curvature.

CONTEXTO

Danec’s Innovation Hub, La Ola - “The Wave,” establishes a dynamic relationship with its industrial site. Founded in 1972, Danec sought a space reflecting their ongoing transformation, merging their heritage with a forward-thinking approach to innovation. La Ola bridges the gap between tradition and modernity, embodying a balance between industrial functionality and contemporary workspace design.

It serves as a catalyst for collaboration and innovation, symbolizing Danec’s commitment to progress. La Ola showcases a unique architectural experience where diverse ideas collide and thrive in an environment celebrating simultaneous vision—an integration of seemingly contradictory concepts into a cohesive design. It contrasts simplicity with elegance, flexibility with efficiency, and industrial elements with inviting spaces. Technology empowers while craftsmanship shines, creating a truly distinct experience.

The desire for a connection to nature emerged as one key theme from the participatory workshops we conducted. The abundant windows and green spaces seamlessly blend indoor and outdoor environments. For many, the presence of nature has been a source of inspiration. This integration not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the space but also contributes to overall well-being and productivity, making it integral to the project’s success.

The Innovation Hub stands as a significant addition to the Danec campus, symbolizing the company’s unwavering commitment to innovation. It provides a dynamic environment for employees to generate new ideas and develop products, while also serving as a platform to showcase Danec’s innovative culture to customers and partners.

Going beyond its role as a workplace, ‘La Ola’ redefines the conventional office by igniting collaboration and creativity.

ACTUACIÓN

“La Ola” became a whole with its surroundings, seamlessly integrating with the industrial landscape while simultaneously standing out as a symbol of progress and sustainability.

The decision to incorporate recycled materials like poly-aluminum not only showcases a commitment to environmental stewardship but a sensible choice for the ever changing temperature of the project’s location. In Sangolquí, where temperatures swing by 20 degrees daily, the material’s durability and flexibility guarantee comfort. Rooms remain cool and well-insulated even at midday, when temperatures peak, allowing for closed windows when acoustic isolation is required.

Crafted through co-creation with the client, its design prioritizes human-centered principles, putting the needs and aspirations of the people who will use the space first. This approach guided its development, ensuring that every aspect aligns with the values of the community.

Upon completion, “La Ola’’ transcended functionality and aesthetics to become a beacon of community empowerment within Danec, redefining the notion of a “workspace”. Its versatility is evident through the diverse range of events it hosts and daily interactions, making it the heart of Danec for its employees. It has become a melting pot of perspectives, bringing together individuals from diverse departments and backgrounds within the company, from plant workers to engineers and directors.

Its most significant impact lies in its ability to facilitate a sense of belonging among employees. The building has the capacity to empower individuals and the organization as a whole, encouraging inclusivity and innovation by breaking down traditional barriers.
