OBJETIVO

SESC is an organization responsible for offering extra-curricular education, social, cultural and sports activities for employees in commerce and services and for citizens as well. The program is organized in four groups of spaces: cultural, sports, social and health. All these spaces designed for multiple uses are integrated and house different activities. The program also includes administration, maintenance, and infrastructure areas. Seeking to suit multiple and specific uses, the building is formed by two volumes: a vertical cylinder cut by a transversal plane and a curved horizontal volume, facing a public park. Within the horizontal volume, there are three public levels: 1. The ground floor contains a large entrance hall leading to a theatre, a gym, a library, an indoor playground, and others facilities. 2. The second floor is visually linked and connected to the first floor by a void and a ramp. It also contains an exhibition hall, a lobby, a restaurant, the indoor and outdoor swimming pools, the arena’s entrance, and the administrative areas. 3. The third floor is a rooftop terrace with a garden, and a view of the park, the city of Jundiai, and a protected mountain range called “Serra do Japi”. Within the cylindrical volume, there is the multi-purpose arena with three tiers of seats linked to the levels of the horizontal volume by a surrounding hall.

CONTEXTO

The project was developed according to some guidelines: -Harmonious spatial relation between the building, the environment and the surrounding urban areas. -A friendly large entrance inviting everyone to join in. -A transparent visual link between internal and external spaces connected either horizontally or vertically. -Voids linking the different levels. -A mix of different areas of activities enabling interaction among people with different interests. -Curved spaces to enrich the spatial experience and embrace the public. -Dialogue with Brazilian modern and popular architecture. -The building was designed to be sustainable, minimizing its negative environmental impact by efficient and moderate use of materials and energy. For this purpose, we have adopted natural light and ventilation, and used solar panels to heat water.

ACTUACIÓN

As designed, SESC Jundiai became an urban landmark and reference center for culture and leisure. All activities promoted are aimed at the various age groups, from children to elderly, occurring at the same time for the four thousand people visiting the building day-to-day. Various scales and broad spaces were conceived to suit the differences between the users and the large number of attendees. Eighty percent of the users are employed in commerce and services, with salaries of approximately U$ 600. The profile of the users has confirmed the social role that SESC proposed to fulfill, by taking culture, leisure and health for those who need the most.
